NDP Leadership 2012

NDP Leadership 2012

On March 24th, 2012 New Democrats will help elect a new leader of our party. This leadership convention is vital not just to the party but also to the labour movement. Labour needs a strong New Demcoratic Party and we need a leader of that party that understands and supports unions.

Rally with Caterpillar workers "everybody's fight"

London Day Of Action

LONDON, ON (January 21, 2012) -- CEP joined the more than 15,000 demonstrators who rallied in London's Victoria Park in a show of solidarity with 465 CAW Local 27 members who have been locked-out by U.S. multi-national Caterpillar. Above, CEP President Dave Coles (left) with CAW President Ken Lewenza. "CEP members across Canada stand with Caterpillar workers and against corporate greed," said Coles. "This is not just an issue for one Local or one union, it's everybody's fight, and that's clear from the overwhelming support here today." [more]

Hats off to the Canadian Federation of Students

Hats off to the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) for organizing a national day of action today to get the message across to Stephen Harper’s government that “education is a right!”

Our union stands side by side with students across the country, literally and figuratively, because we believe that education is the great leveler.  It’s at the core of an equal society.

What's with the name-calling?

For those of us who have been targets for awhile, it’s getting kind of old hat. Nevertheless it’s good to see mainstream media columnists and editorialists jumping on the Harper government for demonizing and name-calling its opponents –  in this case those who want a voice on the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline.

I’ve been thinking about this particular Conservative government tactic. What’s behind it is really quite simple:  Like any school-yard bully, the root of these attacks about “foreign money”, “radical groups”, and “extremists”, is fear.

Refinery dreams, pipeline realities

Top of the agenda for Stephen Harper when he visits Beijing next week will be the sale of Canada's crude oil to China. The Conservative government's enthusiasm for exporting this country's raw resources has come under fire for perpetuating our reputation as hewers of wood and drawers of water. New Democrats, such as leadership candidate Brian Topp, have called for raw bitumen from Canada's oil sands to be processed at home before being sent south to the United States or to Asia.

Workers at Crofton mill reject new contract, key to company's plan to restructure $810 million in debt

Published by Vancouver Sun on 01 Feb 2012
Catalyst Paper said it is seeking court-ordered creditor protection Tuesday after workers at its Crofton pulp and paper mill rejected a new labour contract that was key to a voluntary restructuring plan.
